Safety in Paris
Be aware if you are approached by individuals offering their services, choose instead to visit the official sales point.
Don't keep wallets in your back trouser pocket, keep bags safely closed, make sure you don't leave your mobile phones lying around.
Wherever possible, choose bank cashpoints protected by a door which limits access to one person at a time. Keep a note of the numbers of your traveller's cheques and credit cards separately. Hotels and apartments often provide safe boxes, either in the room or at reception - use them!

Customs in France

Since France joined the EU, customs services are less apparent, in particular in Paris railway stations. However the law must still be complied with.
You may bring in 200 cigarettes (or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars), 2 litres of wine and 1 litre of spirits, 50g of perfume, ¼ litre of eau de toilette. Any quantities beyond the legal limits must be declared spontaneously.

Shopping in Paris
During the week, the department stores all have one late-night opening day, known as a "nocturne" until 9pm. Supermarkets are open at different times depending on the neighbourhood, every day except Sunday, until 8, 9 or 10pm.
Shops are open all day from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Some smaller shops may close over lunchtime between midday and 2pm, or all day on Monday. Sundays and public holidays are the usual closing days, although there are some exceptions...

Banks and exchange bureaux, such as the CCF, fix their rates according to the market which fluctuates from day to day. All rates should be displayed outside the agency. The exchange rate is correct if the difference between buying and selling rates is approximately 5%.You can use your international credit card to withdraw euros at automatic cash machines in banks, 24 hours a day. Make sure you check beforehand with your own bank however, because you may be charged for this service.
